  1. Jeans

From the recording Eons Away

Good old jeans - those trusty companions through life's ups and downs.

It's also the track that started all of this, in March 2015, back in my apartment in Cali. I was practicing some Hendrix tunes and I got inspired to do a bluesy-funky-Chili Peppers' style track. I started up a drum machine and just jammed on the guitar and recorded it. The rest has been an 18 month process to create and arrange the track - mostly via cutting stuff out.

"Jeans" has been three different songs: it sounds absolutely nothing like the original demo. Nothing at all, you'd swear they were totally different songs, even though the guitar and the string orchestra on the release are from that original recording.

The vocals at the end are from the second version, which was called "Glitch". It sounded like Robert Palmer, so people kept saying. The chorus was removed ("glitch" is a hard word to sing without sounding like you are vomiting) and what was left became this song.

The solo in this is one of my favorites that I've ever recorded (my all-time favorite is the solo in Nothing That I'm Needing). The string orchestra was arranged after the solo part - I was imagining a string quartet while I played, and then had to go back and actually create what I had in my head. Not easy.

Lyrics

Life - drive you round the bend
God - now what do you send?

(Line on up) With your pocketful of dreams
Walk on out, you've got nothing but the seams of your...

...Jeans - walk you to the end
I had dreams - now I don't know what they meant

(Well, that's where you went wrong, 'cause you didn't read the fine print)

Jeans - walk you to the end (and there's no way around it)
I had dreams - now I don't know what they meant

(Line on up) With your pocketful of dreams
Walk on out, you've got nothing but the seams of your jeans

Sometimes you need someone to hold you
Sometimes you need someone to hold

Jeans - with your pocketful of dreams, line on up
Jeans - with your pocketful of dreams, line on up

Line on up
Line on up

Jeans - walking free
